Each commission begins with an idea and is developed through a thoughtful, collaborative process.
From sculptural ceramics and custom woodwork to functional pieces and statement artwork, each detail can be tailored to reflect your vision. Form, material, color, texture, & finish are customized to create a piece that feels intentional and entirely personal.
tHE COMMISSION PROCESS
The full commission process can be completed remotely or in person.
Begin by submitting a commission inquiry with your initial ideas — where the piece might live, materials you’re drawn to, approximate scale, inspiration images, desired timeline, and anticipated investment.
You don’t need every detail decided before reaching out. The best commissions start with a feeling, not a spec sheet.

This conversation begins the creative process. Through a thoughtfully guided discussion you share your story — the space, the light, the colors, what you want the piece to hold. We envision where the work will live and how it will be used, and set the creative direction together, along with materials, scale, timeline, and budget.
During the consultation, we will discuss the creative direction, materials, scale, finish, timeline, and budget for your piece.

From our conversation I develop an initial concept — depending on the project, this may include sketches, proposed dimensions, material selections, and glaze or finish directions. Think of it as a compass, not a blueprint. You’ll review the direction and share feedback before we move forward.
A note on how I work: I don’t build from exact renderings. Glaze in particular has a life of its own — the color on a test tile and the color on a finished form, fired at full scale, are rarely the same, and that difference is where the best surfaces come from. What you approve is the spirit and direction of the piece. What you’re trusting me with is the judgment, at the bench and at the kiln, to carry it there.

Once the direction, scope, timeline, and pricing are approved, a deposit reserves your commission and begins production. Because each piece is created specifically for its collector, deposits are nonrefundable.

This is where the trust pays off. Your piece is built by hand, and within the direction we set, I follow the work where it leads — a glaze that breaks more beautifully than planned, a form that asks for a different line. Ceramic and wood are living materials; variation in grain, tone, glaze, and form isn’t a departure from the design — it’s the reason you commissioned a handmade piece instead of ordering a product. No two works are ever alike, including yours.
The work takes shape with every stage documented. Some collectors love watching the piece emerge; others want one final reveal. The experience is tailored to you.

When the work is complete, you’ll receive a final view with images and delivery details. The final balance is due before the artwork is delivered. Local pickup, delivery, national shipping, installation, and specialty packaging are arranged to suit the size and nature of the piece — complimentary local install is available on many projects.

Investment
Commission pricing is based on the size, materials, complexity, finishing, and delivery needs of the project. A detailed proposal is provided after the initial consultation, before any work begins.

TImeline
Most commissioned pieces require approximately 6 to 12 weeks from approval. Timelines will vary with the scale and nature of the work.

Delivery
Grip Fast Studio offers national shipping, local delivery, and local pickup for commissioned artwork, coordinated with you and specific to your piece. Shipping, installation, and specialty packaging are quoted separately unless otherwise noted.
